Ouija - Chapter 11
I'd dispelled the only person who'd ever bothered to listen to my problems, and I was left feeling like an empty shell - an echo. Like Saul.
I travelled to school in a haze of repetitive thoughts; I travelled home in the same state. The only time I felt alive was when I was asleep, and dreaming of him.
The dreams were the same - filled by the black night sky, the September moon and his voice and breath across the back of my neck. I could feel his heartbeat resonating through the night, making me catch my breath as shivers racked my spine.
He was inches away, yet untouchable at the same time. I knew he was nearby, but I never saw him, nor heard him.
It was the most infuriating thing. He could be watching my struggle for all I knew, laughing at the zombie-like state I'd adopted. He was a drug, I needed him constantly and every time I got the slightest taste, I needed more and more. It was like some kind of downward spiral.
The weeks passed, and September became October. If my famil
Ouija - Chapter 10
"I'm home!" I called as Amery and I entered the house.
My mum was the first to respond, striding along the hallway to meet me then halting sharply.
"Where were you?" I asked her. "You weren't in this morning." I pretended not to notice her coldness and hugged her nonetheless.
"The job centre." She said bluntly.
"Right...are you sure you don't want some time off before you reconsider work?" I said gently.
"Don't change the subject." She waggled a finger at me threateningly.
"Huh?" I already had a slight inkling of what she might be referring to, but decided to play dumb.
"You slipped laxatives into your brother's beer."
Amery laughed raucously, clapping me on the shoulder then sitting at the foot of the stairs as he waited for us to start arguing. I bit my lip.
"I'd rather he spent the day in the bathroom than drinking." I said simply, shrugging a shoulder as I did so and coming to sit beside Amery, who appeared calmer now.
"So would I, but this isn't the way to go a
Ouija - Chapter 9
The rest of the day passed by in a frustrating pattern - Amery following me and asking questions, and me ignoring him altogether.
Although, I'll admit, he made Maths class seem more entertaining.
He sat on the teacher's desk and, for almost half the lesson, merely tugged her marker pen from her grip every time she got up to write examples on the board. Of course, the others in my class would have just seen her struggling with the pen, which rolled back and forth across the desk in a seemingly normal manner - therefore making my teacher seem like she was the problem, and not the Entity that proceeded to toy with her sanity.
I had to clamp my hand over my mouth so I wouldn't laugh as the other students muttered under their breath about how she was mentally challenged.
If anyone was mentally challenged, it was me - the girl who could see ghosts.
I didn't let that phase me for the time being, but I secretly planned to take the Ouija board back to the shop tonight. Genti would just hav
Ouija - Chapter 8
"Oh, shit..." I breathed, running my hands over the imprints. It suddenly all rushed back to me - the red eyes, the warmth...
Whoever, or whatever, had been in my room last night had done this.
I figured out the situation easily - the boy from textiles was the boy from the Ouija board, Amery, and Amery was the one who'd done this. Amery was the spirit conjured by myself from the board.
How did I not realise before?
"Damn you, Amery!" I whispered. I turned off the water and dried myself, slipping on my pale blue dressing gown and making my way out onto the landing.
Suddenly, a pair of strong arms grabbed me from behind, wrenching me from the floor and dragging me to their chest, where I lashed out ferociously.
"Get off me!" I cried out, slamming my fist against their muscle-knotted arms. Amery! I knew it, he was here all along!
It took me a few seconds to realise that, if the boy from textiles was indeed Amery, then this person was too muscular to be him. He also smelled suspiciousl
Ouija - Chapter 7
Presently, my head was still pressed into my mum's leg.
"Why did they fire you?" I asked quietly.
"They didn't fire me ...... we just took a quick meeting and concluded that this was the best option." She said, and I got to my feet, the box in hand. "Here, let me take that." She said, trying to wrap her remaining arm around it.
"No, no. I'll carry it." I said, taking the box into the kitchen and setting it down on the counter.
Saul was currently sitting on the counter in his Calvin Klein's, beer can in one hand, cigarette in the other as he wafted the smoke out the window. He started. "I...uhm...y-you're home!" He leapt to his feet and used the beer can to try and cover a few choice parts of his body. I smirked.
"And you're naked." My mother replied bluntly, using her hand to cover her eyes.
"No! No I-I'm wearing pants!" He retorted, now using a kitchen towel to cover himself once he discovered the beer can was slightly too cold against his manlihood.
"Well done, 'bout time you l
Ouija - Chapter 6
I ran up the stairs to my room, quietly easing the door ajar and peering in. I half expected to see the Ouija board running across the room on a pair of wooden legs. To my slight disappointment, it wasn't.
"Aw..." I groaned, sitting beside it and poking it for a third time. "So, you do your moving when I'm out the room, huh?" My lips then tugged into a smile.
I pulled the board towards me, drew the curtains and whistled a tune to myself, tapping my nails upon the box and debating whether or not to play.
It's still daylight, so surely nothing very scary will happen. It was just a hunch, but from watching horror movies I figured that, should a nasty spirit come, it'd only take action when I was asleep.
And, being an exceptionally heavy sleeper, I had nothing to fear there. The house could be falling down and I'd still be snoring.
I finally pushed my fears aside and took the lid off the box. I flipped the pointer across the board like a tiddlywink then took it between my thumb and in
Ouija - Chapter 5
For the rest of the day, he followed Bryony and myself to our classes in a disconcerting silence. Bryony kept walking and talking and seemed unaware on his presence, but I couldn't have one second in which his breath wasn't curling across my neck.
In textiles, one of my only lessons without Bryony, he once again seated himself on the teacher's desk and proceeded to play with his hair as he watched me work.
It was creepy. Very creepy...
No one else paid him any attention, as usual, but I found myself forced to look away as he left his perch on the desk and sauntered over.
I was sitting between two other girls I was familiar with, talking quietly and trying to thread a new sewing machine. These types were different to ones I had used previously, but I still managed to conquer it in less than a few minutes.
The girl to my left, Katy, was having trouble with hers. I leaned across to give her some advice, and could feel him sitting right behind me.
I finished speaking and turned back
Ouija - Chapter 4
I was trembling as I got up, stuffed the rules and board back inside the box and threw it into my wardrobe, propping my trusty chair against the closet door should anything nasty try to get out.
Then I returned to bed, turned off my lamp and kept the covers pulled up over my head as I tried to sleep.
That night my dreams were plagued with ornate numbers and letters. It seemed I was standing on an enormous Ouija board; either that or I was now tiny.
I was running full pelt across the glossy wooden surface, leaping over the massive contorting numbers and letters. The very edge of my vision was blurred, tinted sepia like an old photo. I could hear whispering and warm breath coiling across my neck, and I quickly realised that whomever the breath issued from, I was fleeing them.
The number 7 reared from its place on the board, peeling away from the wooden surface with a sickening noise, then collapsed to the left, blocking my path with the black spidery font.
I could hear the ominous
